Sewn Open Series

Sewn Open is influenced by kintsugi, the Japanese art of repairing ceramic breaks with gold, highlighting flaws while breathing new life into a broken object and honoring its history. My process embraces a similar philosphy, constructing, deconstructing and reconstructing through acrylic mediums, cutting, sewing and gold foil applications. The inclusion of lace (often my family heirlooms) infuses personal meaning while surfacing themes such as craft, gender and time. Lace was not considered an art form and thread was initially banned from some museums. Circles are an important, recurring element and reflect my passion for nature, spirituality and community. Layered with meaning, this series conveys themes of unity, resilience and honor at a time in this world where all would benefit from deepening these traits. Materials include acrylic, fibre, glue, mediums and gold leaf on canvas. I love creating works that transcend tension with grace and beauty.
