 Daring to Create – The Adventure of Being an Artist

Have you ever wondered what if? Joanne Probyn has made a life of asking this question. Her curiosity and commitment have led her to become a full-time, contemporary, abstract painter and hand embroiderer. Yet, making art is more than choosing the right colors. Joanne invites us on her unique path sharing how she finds balance, inspiration and motivation. Her amazing journey spans decades, careers and cultures. Following the creative professional dream often requires great leaps of faith! Discover Joanne’s key learnings while taking a visual tour of her beautiful art.

Her contemporary embroidery was recently featured in Fun Size, a curated art book published by Jen Tough Gallery, New Mexico. Career heights include local and international awards such as North Vancouver Arts Council Award for Excellence in Painting and contributions to Vancity, Vancouver, BCAMA Marketer of the Year, and Chandler Chicco Agency, New York, Magellan’s Top 50 Publicity Campaigns. Joanne is the past vice president of the Canadian Public Relations Society – Vancouver Chapter. She completed her education in design and illustration at Capilano University and holds a marketing management certificate from UBC Sauder. 

Joanne is a founding member of FLOURISH Art Group, a BC-Based, female artist collective and is a key contributor at her studio collective, Eastside Atelier in Vancouver. She is an active member of several art groups in Canada and the United States including THRIVE Art Studio, B.C., and The Artists Alliance, New Mexico, and the Canadian Artists’ Representation/Le Front des artistes canadiens (CARFAC). Case Study

Essence, Mixed Media on Canvas, 16″ x 16″ (SOLD)

Client commissioned me to create a new, larger version of my “Coming Home” painting (as seen on Facebook). Client had recently renovated their home and featured their custom painting as an uplifting pop of colour in their new, minimalist design.

We commissioned Joanne to create a new painting based on a work of hers that we saw online. We wanted her same painting recreated at a bigger scale. What she produced was amazingly close to the original we liked, yet uniquely ours. We love our new painting! Her original art really breathes some life into our newly renovated home. She was professional and we enjoyed her engaging process. Joanne ensured we were perfectly satisfied with our new artwork. We highly recommend her for a custom painting.  – Dave and Pamela

Performing with DJ Sonora

Cosmic Lullaby, 24″ x 24″, Acrylic and Graphite on Canvas

This painting was created in 2020 as a test for a new collaborative work with DJ Sonora. She invited me to perform live in her series Cosmic Lullaby. We wanted to soothe our locked-down audience with live music and painting during the pandemic. Visual and performing arts had come to a complete halt. Our performance was done in separate locations, screened live and recorded across a channels such as Facebook, YouTube and Twitch. To create both the test and the final painting, I dimmed the studio lights and projected a kaleidoscope animation onto my canvas. I interpreted the projection abstractly and painted intuitively to the music. Beautiful recordings of Sonora’s downtempo and ambient soundscapes filled my studio. Both paintings were completed with final touches under normal light. The recording was shared for only 24 hours following; the event as a shared experience was our intention.
